Alii Kula LavenderBy Patti King (Patti1957) on March 18, 2010
|On your next trip to Maui you have to take the time to drive Upcountry and see the Alii Kula Lavender Farm.|
The Lavender Farm is a great place to head for a few hours when your body tells you that you need to take a break from all those sunny beaches you have been enjoying. Believe me you will appreciate the cooler climate. This magical place is located on the slopes of Haleakala which is Hawaiian for house of the sun. It is a beautiful 10-acre working farm that grows 45 different varieties of lavender. As soon as you get out of your car, just let your senses guide you to the gift shop. The place exudes lavender. This is where you can pick up a map of the grounds and where you will want to start and finish your tour. If you would prefer a guided tour, you can make arrangements ahead of time. They have a couple of different ones to choose from. There are several mini garden areas with tables and chairs spread throughout the many paths. As you are wandering around you will see some beautiful sculptures, some of which are made by native artists. When you have taken in all of the unbelievable views, you can get some refreshments at the snack bar area in the gift shop. They have a variety of food and drink items available. Be sure to try their lavender scones, lavender tea, or lavender lemonade, I can never decide on which one I want but you can't go wrong with either choice. In the shop you can purchase specialty products that are produced from the lavender that they grow. I think everything in the place has lavender in it. The gift shop is a nice place to pick up those made in Maui gifts to take back to the mainland with you. I never leave the place without my next year's supply of shampoo and conditioner. They have many different products from bath and body, to food and even some clothes items as well. If you run out of something that you bought while at the Lavender Farm and you find that you won't be getting back to the island as soon as you would like, you can order online at AKL and have it shipped right to your door. One thing that is a little disconcerting about the place is that they don't have restrooms, p er say, but they have the most amazing porta potties that I have ever seen. Foot pump flush and foot pump hand washing stations! Overall the best encounter to date that I have ever had involving a portable bathroom.
