Living by the Hudson River, we get some amazing thunderstorms over the water's wide expanse. Here's a shot of lightning over Peekskill Bay, where I live, taken at night time last summer. (Canon Rebel XSi, Sigma 10-20mm at 10mm, cropped, f/4, 20 seconds, ISO 200)

I call this photo "Moon over Peekskill", since it was a full moon photographed from my front yard, where I live in Peekskill, NY. The image was manipulated in Photoshop Elements and Aperture 2, to enhance the coloration in the cloud cover. (Canon 5D II, Canon 100-400mm lens at 400mm, f/5.6 at 0.4, ISO 400)

omg, the lightning photo gave me goosebumps. we get heat storms here a lot in southeast Texas, but i just got a new camera and haven't had one in quite some time. That picture is gorgeous though and I only wish I could get some pictures like that. I love the moon one too, they are both very good. Did you manipulate the lightning picture at all?

Hi JoliesMomma,

Thanks for your feedback. I hope you have fun experimenting with your new camera! I used my editing software to reduce the exposure in the lightning bolt photo, since it was originally too washed out to see the lightning bolt clearly. Then I sharpened it up a bit. The dusty lavender coloration is typical of many lightning photos.

Wow! Great shot, Mike! I see Indian Point in that shot. Is that from your house? You're fortunate to have a wide open view like that.

Hey Victor, it's been a long time! Yes, that is Indian Point - their Communications Director asked for a copy of the photo after it "went viral", and it was also used as the background shot for an evening weather report on the evening TV news. Although I live near the river, it was not taken from my home. I went up to the Peekskill Inn during the storm with the intent of getting some good lightning photos from under the protection of the balcony awnings, and it worked out just fine. I ran a series of 20-second exposures, and this was the most dramatic.

After spending the day with Zuzu yesterday hitting several nurseries, I met hubby in the evening in SF atop Twin Peaks overlooking the city to practice some night shots. We are both new to this so it's going to take a while, sooo much to learn!
Here are a couple of day time shots he took to show you the views. You drive up this windy road to get to the top of the peak.

Brad took this just as the lights were coming on. He left to AutoFocus on though so it's a bit blurry plus the wind didn't help. Still need to work on the settings. By the time I got there, he was shaking from the cold!

I took only a about a dozen shots, this is the only one I kind of liked, the rest we just dumped. We'll keep working on it.

Nice, Sue.

I took this about five years ago with my first p & s, without a tripod - held against the front gates.
