Their ability to coast just above the waves is extraordinary.

You can see some of the detail of its feathers and hooked bill.

Moving inland a little bit, one finds plenty of tri-color herons in the estuaries.

Often they stand alone, but these two were together.

At first glance this looks like a snowy egret, but a closer inspection of the feet and bill reveals it is a juvenile blue heron whose coloration hasn't changed yet.

How do they stay so clean when taking off and landing in such muddy waters?!

Instead of running after perfection, why not simply walk in faith?

Thanks Karen - much appreciated. It's easy to take good photos when you have great subjects like these birds!

Mike... Can you change the title of this thread to just "Shorebirds"? I love it that others share their photos, and don't want any to think they can't! Thanks!

Here's a couple from near home, along the river.

Great Blue Heron fishing...

Nice suggestion, Karen; I've changed the title.

And what nice additions! I love the outline on each of the Cormorant's back feathers.

Mike are you using a fixed lens or the 100-400 on the canon?

Karen what do you use?

I currently use a 55-250mm lens.

Your shots are wonderful. Are you using a full frame body. I am seriously looking at the Mark 5 ll. I am also considering a super tele. I just don't know which one yet. You must really be able to get fairly close with the 55-250 to get the quality of shots you have posted..
