This grasshopper was unusually cooperative for my picture-taking. I guess this was its "good side".

Millipedes like this one are common on Bear Mountain, where many of the mushrooms in the Fungus forum were photographed. They are harmless, and if touched will curl up into a swirled form. They also sleep that way. Unlike centipedes, they are not aggressive, and I've read that they make good "pets".

This is a Golden Silk "Banana" Spider in a marsh on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Females Golden Silk Spiders are among the largest orb-weavers in the US (weavers of the "spoked" wheel shaped webs so common in our gardens).

Christian Lacroix must be their designer. Here's an outfit he designed for Paris fall fashion week. Quite a resemblance, don't you think?

Great shots above!

A couple of years ago, I raised luna moths from eggs, through the whole caterpillar stage and cocoon.

A couple of photos from that...
A late stage caterpillar...

Gosh, I love luna moths, and just finished a novel where they were a thread woven throughout the story. How did you do it (raise the moths, I mean)?

Got the eggs by mail from a guy in Canada. Raised the caterpillars on Sweet Gum leaves once they hatched. About five weeks later, they cocooned. About six weeks later (I think) they hatched. I took pictures and let them go! I loved it. I did it in 2007 and 2008, and I would do it again.

If I get the energy, I'll do a thread with the whole life cycle.
