Salvia elegans (Pineapple Sage). This one has a strong scent of pineapple when you brush up against it.

FIRST SALE UPDATE

i have just sent a blast regarding this future book of Richard's. it will be a valuable tool i think for all salvia enthusiasts. it is not the final draft of the book but there is information on all the plants he has to offer and it should help you all decide on your orders.

and here is how we will proceed from this point........

If you are interested in helping richard with his research and if you are interested in receiving richard's unedited book on salvia (this will be thru email attachment) you must email me. i will send the questionaire. after you fill out the questionaire send it back to me. then i will send the book to you.

Richard has devised the questionaire for us to fill out. it won't be hard. just things like where you live. mine might read something like this........i live in fate, texas which is 25 miles northeast of dallas. my property is open on all sides and i live at the bottom of a hill. or i live in a valley or in the middle of a forest or whatever might be unique about your particular property. Richard knows a lot about growing conditions in lots of places just in his head. he knows wind and rainfall for many areas as well but he may ask questions along these lines as well

You must order on this thread. I will collect names, addresses and orders and forward them on to richard. When you order please state things like this...........i only want this salvia if it is hardy to my zone. or.....i only want these salvia if they will grow in shade. or whatever it is that you are wanting. THEN richard will be able to advise if you are choosing correctly for what you are wanting. AGAIN i state this.........MANY SALVIA HARDINESS ZONES REMAIN UNKNOWN so all that information will be the best guess that richard has. if you order a marginal plant richard can not be responsible next year as far as replacing plants that don't return. anyone not understanding this please ask questions as any order you turn in will be at your own risk in the final anyalysis.

any orders already turned in i would ask that you do it all over again. and state any requirements you might have along with the order. also if you want the plants now or as soon as they are ready state that as well. OTHERWISE ALL PLANTS WILL BEGIN SHIPPING LATE AUG/EARLY SEPT.

I am so excited to bring you salvia from Richard Dufresne. His name is pronounced the French way ( du frain) not the Texas way (doo FREZ knee).

SOME OTHER SALVIA LINKS
http://www.crownsvillenursery.com/information_links/salviain...

Below is a list of salvia that i liked as most of the varieties are non-blue. They have varying hardiness so please check Richard's site for what might grow best in your area. Also please note that you have probably never heard of many of the salvia below. Due to that not a lot is known about plant hardiness throughout the country. Richard gives an educated guess on many varieties on his site. Also if you have questions on a particular plant's hardiness i will email Richard if i need to. Just ask me to find out.

Even though we have this list to order from it is MY LIST. Richard is essentially offering each of you the chance to build your own list and he has opened his entire plant inventory to us. His site is not completely up to date as it has been a work in progress for him. So if you see a salvia on his site that you would prefer to order just name it. If Richard does have it in stock he said he would custom root plants for us. So you may order from the list below or you may pick completely different plants from his site and build your own list. When i receive orders i will forward them on to Richard. If he will have problems filling your requests he will let us know at that time so you can make changes when you need to.

(Insert from Debra: Thread for descriptions Richard provided of the plants on mama's list are here:)
http://cubits.org/notfortheserious/thread/view/58807/

Richard has already rooted the plants below and if you choose other plants he will need 4-5 weeks to root them. One other thing is that he said he can ship now but he will not guarantee the plants from heat death. We both think he could ship salvia now but if you do want plants now it might be a good idea to buy post office insurance for 1.60.

COST OF PLANTS
5.50 per plant
But if you buy 4 salvia you get to choose a free salvia and for every 4 you buy you get another free selection.

SHIPMENT OF PLANTS
Richard will ship now if the plants are rooted and you ask for shipping now but as previously stated he will not be responsible for heat death. This late in the season he prefers to ship most plants mid/late August or early September. If you choose a week to have him ship plants and you see that the heat is going to be a factor Richard can be notified to hold your plants until a better time. But you need to be responsible for notifying either me or Richard about that.
Also once he starts shipping he ships on MON and TUE. and says he can ship 7-8 orders per day.
If you do not state to ship now i will assume that you want late august/early september shipping.

SHIPPING COSTS
The best way to determine this is prob. going to be to have Richard give us a quote for each order. He tries to send as close to actual shipping as the number and weight of the plants allows and does not add any fees to the total.

HOW TO ORDER
The least confusing thing for Susan will prob. be for you to order this way.
First if your plant comes from the list below start it off by saying LISTED PLANTS then name them.
IF YOUR PLANT DOESN'T COME FROM THE LIST BELOW then just say World of Salvia then list your plants.
Then state the shipping date you prefer keeping in mind that if your plant is not on the list below the first possible shipping date will be July 4 or July 11.
Also for every 4 you order please write at the bottom of your order BONUS PLANTS and then list those.

IF YOU CHANGE YOUR ORDER
MAKE A NEW POST EVERYTIME YOU CHANGE YOUR ORDER.
Please keep in mind that Richard is custom rooting plants for us. Do your very best to order what you want THE FIRST TIME. It's ok to add to your list but it becomes harder for him if you cancel. I do not want him stuck with any rooted plants that he grew just for us. He has limited space in his greenhouse and since each plant is essentially Richard's babies he cares about each one and any cancellations will only cause him grief as he tries to find space for each.

HERE ARE THE READY TO GO PLANTS
You may have trouble finding some of the pictures. If there is one that you have questions about i can write or call Richard for at least a plant description if no photos are available. Many photos are on A WORLD OF SALVIA site.

also here is some hardiness and growing info on each of the salvia listed below. this is from richard.

FROM RICHARD'S FYI POST TO MAMA. This text covers his inspection and evaluation for shipping process. Shows the shipped plant sizes pretty well, I think, and the care he takes with his customer's plants.
Debra

"I like to keep freshly potted cuttings for at least two weeks before shipping, to allow for proper root development. This usually means allowing the roots to reach the faces of the root ball in the plants to at least 60 - 70% of the faces, depending on the species and the robustness of the plant. If the soil falls off the roots when the plant is lifted from the pot carefully, it isn’t ready to survive shipping and immediate repotting or setting out in the garden.

Here are the four steps, prior to packing:

1. Receiving the Plants from the Nursery
Thumb of 2011-06-13/lovemyhouse/9c05e3

2. Trimming and Inspection
At this point, I inspect; do a prophylactic spraying for pests, if necessary; and trim, with defoliation of old
leaves.
Thumb of 2011-06-13/lovemyhouse/659e3d

3. Inspection of Root Systems
Here you can see the root systems on three typical plants. The one on the left is ready, the one in the
center is just developed and firm enough to be shipped with a collar to retain soil, and the one on the
right is not yet ready. You can see that the soil is crumbling a bit because it is not yet stabilized by a new
root system.

Thumb of 2011-06-13/lovemyhouse/cafff7

4. Ready for Packing
Here are the plants labeled, with a cardstock collar held on with a rubber band.

Can we order plants now for shipping in late August or early September?

FYI, you mentioned postal insurance... as far as I know, USPS only insures packages against getting lost, and they don't insure live plant delivery... if it takes 27 days to reach you and all the plants die, they will not compensate you.

I am also interested in salvias. It is already too hot here to ship plants - it was high 90's last week.

Would he consider letting us pay now and have them shipped in August/Sept?

canadanna...........DO NOT BUY ULIGINOSA. i would give you some from my yard but if you can believe it mine died last summer. before last summer though it had been here for years so yes it's hardy here. BUT somebody in texas has got some uliginosa for both of us. Big Grin i think pattie with and e and sometimes o has it. you BUY plants like littae (whatever that is). ain't nobody got that as far as i know. lol. next plant meet ask for uliginosa and i bet you'll get several offers.

susan she CAN'T sell the demonchild as i am up next for having him at my house. i am like number 2 human for him.

yes, we can have aug. or sept. del. in fact richard prefers to ship then to now. he just said he would ship now if someone insisted on it.

let me double check what the post office insurance covers.........but i think it covers plant death.........but only the value of the plants and none of the postage costs.

and critter..........plant size...........yes i think they are 2 in. pot size. but i have pictures of actual plants that richard sends. debra has them and when she can she will post them in the 2nd post up there.

the thing with the salvia is this............cause somebody wrote me saying these prices are too high for such a small plant......and they are......but the thing is if you can find these plants anywhere they are all around 5.00. but mostly you can't find them. not in my part of the country at least. calif. and north carolina might have them.

Well how much is that number of plants, I figured it was 150.00 plus and that is a lot less than the bulbs. Big Grin
I think I figures that about 5 or 6 would be free.

if you get 2 more........or 36 plants you get 9 free plants.

REMEMBER TO STATE IF THE PLANTS CAN SHIP ON RICHARD'S SCHEDULE....i.e. late aug./early sept. or say now. if you do not state now then i will assume shipping is on richard's schedule.
