just talked to ccvacation about caring for dahlia and i think you'll agree that her explanation of growing dahlia makes it sound doable as we've all grown tomatoes..........HERE IS WHAT SHE SAID.

Think about dahlias as you would TOMATOES.
-Don't plant them until you would plant out tomato plants.
-After they sprout and you see green coming from the ground, water like tomatoes
-fertilize as if you are growing tomatoes
-use tomato cages to support

To sum up dahlias growing,
-Plant after last frost
-Lots of water on a consistent basis after you see green
-Support plant by staking or using cages
-Fertilize
-deadhead and cut as many flowers as you can, and it will produce more for you

These are tender perennials, and can drown in winter rains or freeze in northern winter cold. You can treat them like annuals (and be happy if they return) or try to dig and store them. Either way, if grown like a prized tomato, they will return the favor by giving you many MANY bouquets of blooms this summer.

i made a sandy loam bed last fall. it's about a foot deep. i am going to plant my dahlia there. if they are going to survive our usually wet winters that'll be the best place. plus it is surrounded on 3 sides. less wind maybe unless it does that aerodynamic or whatever it is thing where the wind swoops down harder in enclosed spaces. is that real or did i make it up?

Folks who have overwintered dahlias successfully in the ground in warmer climates often talk of the importance of TARPING over the ground where the plants were, which keeps them from drowning during winter rains. I've heard about growers tarping AND insulating on top of the tarp in much colder climates. They still would need to be dug and divided every few years.

can i use that photo in my first post? i love that. thank you.

also cc if a person was going to dig them up in the fall what kind of medium do you put them in to store them? what if i dug and put them in pots that i brought inside? if i did it early enough would they stay green all winter especially if i took them outside on sunny days thru out the winter?

and what is the very worst thing you can do to a dahlia?

also susan put me down for these......
you already got the other 3 right?

also cc if a person was going to dig them up in the fall what kind of medium do you put them in to store them? VERMICULITE IS NORMALLY THE ACCEPTED BEST MEDIUM

what if i dug and put them in pots that i brought inside? SOME GROWERS PLANT THE POTS IN THE GROUND, THEN PUT THE POT WITH NO WATER IN STORAGE WITHOUT DISTURBING TUBERS. A VERY GOOD METHOD.

if i did it early enough would they stay green all winter especially if i took them outside on sunny days thru out the winter? THEY EVENTUALLY GET BLOOMED OUT, AND IS BEST IF THEY START FRESH EACH YEAR.

and what is the very worst thing you can do to a dahlia? TOO MUCH (drown) OR TOO LITTLE WATER... Think tomatoes, and you'll be fine.
