|I think Phlox varieties are pretty adaptable as far as soil goes... my MIL has sandy loam; I have amended clay; both of us grow garden phlox just fine.
I always like varieties with a white or contrasting eye as far as standing out en masse.
btw, I just cmailed you about a wholesale source... we (group buy for local DGers) got bare root phlox from them a couple of times & were very pleased. They had the shorter "Flame" varieties last spring -- pink, purple, and white w/red eye. This is the first year I've had them in the garden, so I can't comment on overwintering or increasing, but they looked good this year. I like their astilbes, too.
