I just got back from putting down my 14 year old Rottie. His name was Max and he was the best darn dog we ever had. In the past couple of days he lost the use of his hind legs and although we walked him with a towel holding up his hind area we knew it was quality of life and it was time to say goodbye. My heart is broken and my other dog Tessa knows it ... she won't stop kissing me. Anyway a sad day in our house.

Relax. It's only a small setback.
I'm so sorry. 14 years is a hard thing to give up. When that day comes it's the hardest, hollowest day ever. Such special beasts work their way right into the deepest chambers of our hearts and memories. I hope your fondest memories of Max temper the emptiness somehow, and wish some extra TLC for Tessa in these days to come too.

Take care,

Such sad news. I am so sorry about your loss. Your beautiful Max had the best love and care that was possible. You did your best and no one wants to see their loved one suffer, human or four pawed.
Sending my heartfelt condolences to you and your family. A hug for Tessa. I am sure she misses Max too.

What a handsome boy. He has that regal, at-the-ready stance and intense, focused gaze that I'd wager was fixed squarely upon a squirrel, perhaps? I wouldn't want to be a squirrel in his yard!

Hope you are doing a tiny bit better today. These first days are the toughest.

Kathi: So sorry about your handsome Max, he really was a gorgeous boy. Wow, 14 years?? That is a long life for a large breed dog, it shows he had wonderful humans who took great care of him! Is Tessa a Rottie too? I'm glad you have her to help ease the heartache of the loss of Max.

((((( Hugs ))))) to you, your family and Miss Tessa, who is probably feeling the loss too. Eventually the heartache will subside and you will have only sweet memories of your Max.

Miss Tessa is a Dobie and she will be 4 years old in August. She has stopped eating and will not play. If I offer her a treat she takes it and puts it in Max's bed.

Oh, poor Tessa girl ... she is grieving too. Crying I know she must be sad and missing her Max as much as you are, and she's not understanding where her buddy is. Just give her lots of hugs and pats and keep trying to entice her to eat a little something. I know dogs aren't supposed to have ice cream but I'd try a little vanilla ice cream as a treat to get her to eat something.

Keep us posted on how y'all are doing. Group hug

Yes, please do keep us posted. Anyone who has loved their pets knows this is a hard time, and anyone who thinks animals don't have feelings should spend time with one who's gone through a loss like this. Our golden mix was absolutely forlorn for a few days when her black Lab neighbor pal moved away- just a heap of confused sadness. They cavorted and played almost every day, all day.

I hope you can coax Tessa out of her grief and enjoy her for her own particular merits. I really feel that pets' behavior reflect our own feelings as well, so perhaps she'll feel better as you do, in time. Group hug

I am sorry for your loss. 14 years is an extended life for a Rottweiler. You must have done all the things right to keep Max that long. Rottweilers are one of my favorite breeds and I was able to love one intimately for 12 years. Again, I am sorry for your loss....please give yourself some time and know that others understand.

They think Tessa has pneumonia. She is on anti-biotics and has not eaten in almost a week. Vet says she should start to want to eat in the next few days after the meds have had a chance to make her feel better. It's tough to watch her just lay there having trouble breathing.

I'm sorry to hear of this ongoing misery on top of your losing Max. Aside from treating the pneumonia, can anyone or anything perk her up, let her know there are joyful times ahead? I feel so bad for you and poor Tessa and will keep you in my thoughts.

Tessa is much better now..she is eating and playing. The vet said she had an e-coli infection in her lungs. When I asked how she got that all she could tell me is that somehow she inhaled it???????????????????? She has to be on anti-biotics for a month. One good thing out of all of this is that she was so sick she did not get a chance to miss Max. She has shown no signs of depression or anything, of course she has taken over my love seat and insists it belongs to her now. She started getting up there when she became ill and I did not have the heart to make her get down. Here is a photo of her in April. She's a Dobie but I did not get her ears docked because I think it's cruel.

What a cute pose. I am laughing at her. Glad that Tessa is much better. She looks like a giant dachshund with those pretty ears.

Hurray for Tessa! I'm so glad you posted an update, even if she's needing treatment, at least she's coming around and coming around well, it sounds. I love her rich colors and her ears too.

I'm so glad for you both and hope she continues to mend. Love seats are a perfect size for a larger dog Big Grin
