As the subject line says, I'm looking for any feedback on something called the Thundershirt which is supposedly 85% effective in calming dogs during thunderstorms, fireworks & a host of other anxious situations. I'm planning on ordering one for my dog on Tuesday unless I get a lot of negative feedback from people who have used it or know people who used it. My dog has problems with thunderstorms & I'm looking for something to help that doesn't involve medication.
I would order the item today but Thundershirt isn't open on the weekend & Mon. is the 4th sooooo Tueday it is.They do have a 45 day moneyback guarantee. Pretty impressive.

I would like to know how it works for you as our Jack Russell cannot be calmed by anything, not even allowing you to hold him! The vet suggested giving him a 25mg Benadryl twice daily during storms, so far this hasn't helped either.

That's the problem..... meds take so long to take effect & I'm not a great believer in meds anyway --- not when they can be avoided. My vet gave me some Ace which if you're familiar with that it's a lot stronger than Benadryl. They give them Ace to keep them sedate after spaying. And it will make her downright weave when she walks but not when it storms. But again the problem is she needs it about an hour before the storm hits & then it lasts so loooong after the storm is over not to mention the fact that 75% of the time the stupid storm decides to miss us & she got drugged for nothing & ends up weaving around the house like a drunkard. No Thank You!
I ordered the Thundershirt & it's on it's way. I'd advise you to go to their website --- Google this: Thundershirt.com & check it out. There are also coupon codes online to save you the shipping at the very least. The official website gives a 45 day money back guarantee.
It was suggested to me by a friend who is a breeder & shows dogs. She saw it at a couple of the shows & said everyone standing around had very good things to say about it. Also; my dogs breeder was a vet tech for her entire career & she emailed her vet about it & her vet has great things to say about the Thundershirt (Tshirt for short).
When we get it we are to get her used to it before there is a need for it. Then when a storm comes she won't be freaked by the Tshirt. Watch my luck we won't have a storm for 45 days! Sticking tongue out
I will report back when we test it out!
PS: It is also reported to be good for all kinds of various anxiety related situations your dog has. Check out the website.

I read somewhere that if you rub your pets hair with Bounty dryer sheets, it will help. I've tried it on my peke, but he has sooo much hair that it didn't do anything for him. He comes and jumps into my lap at the first rumble of thunder. It doesn't seem bo bother my chihuahua yet. He's one year old, but he learns behavior from Shanghai. LOL I don't like to give drugs to my furbabies. The heartworm and flea meds are enough. Here in FL I use them all year round.

Well, after 3 afternoons of Thunderstorms in a row the Thundershirt arrived yesterday & we thought we were going to get another storm but it petered out before ever getting to us.
However, the site & everyone who has used one says to get the dog used to the Tshirt BEFORE the need arises. So, yesterday we spent getting her used to it. Fed her "cookies" off it. Rubbed our scents all over it, layed her toys & bones on it so when she gets a toy she has to encounter the Tshirt & I "loved" the Tshirt. Put it on her 3 or 4 times for 5 -10 minutes each. At first she was quite put out with me for putting it on her & hunched her back when walking in a 1/2 sideways crab walk LOL!!!!! She refused to look at me & clearly displayed her disdain. And she shook herself a LOT. She's getting much more accepting of it today. She actually seems to be accepting it & sits quietly for me to put it on her & isn't upset by it at all. Will acclimate her a few more times today. I think we may "get the big one" this afternoon/evening.
Will keep posting on the outcome.

I am also interested in your results with this storm shirt. Just curious, are the high dollar items? My guess is yes, but of course if it benefits our furbies and we can swing it...it's well worth the financial sacrifice.

Well, I was waiting until all the test trials were in before I posted so as not to have to recant anything.
First I want to say this & I can't stress it enough: It is only my OPINION but I think that if your dog is comforted by you touching or hugging it during T storms then the ThunderShirt (Tshirt) will work. But if however, your dog is like mine & only gets more anxious when comforted in any way even if it's by the dogs casual contact with you during a T storm then the Tshirt may not work.
This is what I found... for my dog... in our particular case.... at first it seemed to help her but we didn't have any MAJOR big time Tstorms. Only up to say 7 on a scale of 1-10. One night we had the worst I've ever been through... off the charts... unexpected, not predicted or I would have been ready. It broke smack on top of our heads, very low like the thunder & lightning was 15 ft. above the roof. At that point it was too late to put the Tshirt on her. She was a wreck & neither of us got any sleep.
After that she was worse than ever for a while. And I would put the Tshirt on her & she seemed to be worse with it than without it. I began to call it the scared straight shirt. Then I began asking her if she wanted me to put it on her. She would actually calm down at the "threat" of me putting it on her. So in a weird, reverse sort of way the Tshirt has helped. I know this isn't the way it's intended to help but whatever works right?
I wouldn't discount that it will help lots of dogs. It just wasn't any panacea for mine. See my comment at the beginning. I still stand by that. I have heard of many, many dogs who do much better with it. Mine just does better without it. LOL!
If you order it directly from Thundershirt.com they give you a 45 day money back guarantee so if in 45 days you find it doesn't work for you then you can get your money back. I say that's worth a shot! I think it was $35 or $40.
Again, I think the reason it didn't work for my dog is because she gets WORSE when comforted in any way & that's what the Tshirt is based on --- comforting your dog --- but if your dog gets better by being comforted then I think there's a very good chance it will work for you.

Pookie (4 yo min Poodle) seems happy to lay at my feet up against me. Storms is the only time he lsys there and sometimes he is partially under the couch. No trembling or fear behavior. So I guess he doesn't need one.
I'm glad that it is helping yours reguardless of the method of use or non.
