It's a problem called coprophagy and it's not unique to Westies--lots of dogs do it. My late Sheltie had that nasty habit too--I managed it by making sure I picked up the yard promptly and that pretty much solved the problem. I never left him outside unsupervised because the yard was only about 3/4 fenced so it wasn't too much of a problem to catch things quickly. If he's eating his own poo, supposedly feeding them some pineapple makes it taste bad so they won't do it, but the pineapple gave my dog diarrhea so I decided picking up the yard regularly was a better fix! I think there might be some other things you can buy too to mix in their food and keep them from doing it.
