Aspen Hill is my home in Northern Virginia. It is named in memory of Aspen, an American Eskimo dog who was a constant and beloved companion during the years of searching for the land and building the house. I grew up in the suburbs of Washington DC, but I always wanted to live in the country. My dream was acres of woods and a winding creek, and Aspen Hill is that and so much more. With the colder weather, I've finally had a chance to start playing with Photoshop to organize my digital photos. Next step is to learn the photo editing techniques. Join me here on a tour of Aspen Hill thru the Seasons...

Winter...
Back to back blizzards in 2010 shut the whole area down for a week, more snow than has been seen in years. It was beautiful. The dogs are Jake and Jordan, a brother/sister duo that are as different as could possibly be. The creek and pond pictures are from another blizzard in 2006. Makes me cold just looking at it.

Spring....
The gardens peak in the spring. First to bloom are snowdrops and helebores on the Hillside Shade Garden. Need to take pictures of the snowdrops next year, but here are a few shots of the helebores.

There are many old logging trails that criss cross thru the woods. They are great for hiking, and on one that runs behind the house I got the idea to make it a Daffodil Trail. I've been planting hundreds, sometimes thousands, of bulbs each fall, but it doesn't seem to make that much of an impact. Love the lemon yellows and whites - my favorite so far is 'Hawera'. I've started to add yellow saucer magnolias and next spring will add some yellow rhododendrons. Skipped bulb planting this year, but have a list for next year!

In late spring, the old fashioned favorites rule - Lilacs, Spriea, Peonies, Iris... The cottage garden holds memories of my grandmothers. I planted Peonies 'Vivid Rose' for Grandma Rose and Iris 'Mary Frances' for Grandma Mary Frances. The 'kiss of the sun' garden plaque at the beginning of this thread is from Grandma Mary Frances' rose garden, and is my most cherished garden ornament.

Dog days of summer...

Ebony and Ashley both passed in 2008. As a puppy, Ebony was with a neighbor's daughter at college, and when she got too big, the daughter brought her out here to her dad's in the country. Our neighbor was often on the road, so Ebony always came to visit, and eventually just stayed. She was a black lab mix, ran the woods as a free spirit, and eventually passed in Jun 2008 at 17+ years old. Ashley, the gentle American Eskimo, was Jake and Jordan's mother. She passed peacefully in her sleep in Oct 2008 at 16 years old. Never thought I'd have four dogs at once, but it sure did make a nice family. It is just Jake and Jordan now, and with them being 14 years old - well, I don't even want to think about it...

Only have a few roses, but want to start a real rose garden next summer. Don't think I'll ever be able to equal Grandma's.

My first vegetable garden was the summer of 2009. I had to build a fence to keep the deer out, and ended up building raised beds inside of it. The Lucketts old timers got a big chuckle - I asked them a zillion questions about vegetable gardening, and they started joking that 'that fancy thing I built didn't look like any vegetable garden they'd ever seen'... They gave me advice all summer. My dad (parents live next door) got into the vegetable gardening too that summer, so it was pretty fun all the way around...

What an enjoyable tour, Terri!!! You certainly got your wish for a beautiful country environment. I bought some "rooting pots" this year and I will try my luck with propagating from my established rose bushes. If I'm successful, I'd be happy to share some roses with you. They would love their beautiful new home.
