Thanks for the new room Thunder! Judy, I agree, we all get puckers, and such, and as long as you are making it with love for the kids, they will love it too! |

this is from Kizmo, it was posted in the "old" room...I moved it over here for continued discussion. I realize this is a little late in the game, but back to the quilting issue above..... Ya know how some fabrics stretch more on the crossgrain than the lenthwise grains? (We covered some of this on the 'other' place in the Tips threads..). Is it possible that since she started quilting crosswise first, that the top fabric just schooched more than it should have? Maybe on this one, starting lengthwise would hold it in place more? Reason I brought this up... the one Downy quilt I worked on, the same thing happened, only not as much as I started sewing diagonally from left to right, but still had some schooches. Another top I worked on, I noticed that there was alot of stretch of the crosswise square, as I was sewing them together with squares of another fabric. The focus squares had a definite direction print, so when I was chaining them together I had to check the other squares for lengthwise/crosswise grain. I wondered at that point whether pressure when sewing across a fabric that stretchy would be akin to sewing on knit, but didn't waste a square to see. I've watched tons of video on chain piecing and such, but other than the obvious directional prints, I've not seen anyone address or even check which sides of the squares that are being sewn together. Maybe it doesn't matter?? I've been trying to match the lengthwise grains together when I put rows together, as that length will stay constant, whereas sewing 2 crosswise grains together can end up being slightly longer. Think of the difference of using the width of a fabric for borders, compared to cutting all the border strips on the length of the fabric.... strips cut from the width are more apt to be wavy, right? Or is it just because I'm a beginner and don't know what I'm doing? PS: I'm glad you all got together to meet at the Festival, sounds like a wonderful weekend! ♥ Kizmo ♥ |

Hiya Pam! Wouldn't it be wonderful if Cubits hold an annual get together and we all will have the chance to meet under one roof!! We can definitely spot Marion's red toe nails!! Sis Judy, you're so lucky to get your hands on those quilts. Now if you could find Italian quilts on your vacation.... wouldn't one be a nice souvenir? Sew... that's cool tip there Kathy! Another thing for all to consider. The crossgrain effect. Learning new word here "schooched".. is that related to stretched or squeezed? Thank you so much for helping constructively. Audrey, I'll be mailing out the kiddy fabric next week plus the instructions, so I hope it will complement what Thunder sent to you. No frogs here yet, Thunder, but we know spring is here as we see more dead animals on the road.. mating season? Thunder, you're doing a good job at motivating us!!! I'm smiling away as nothing can boost one's confidence as a gentle prod reminding us if there's a mistake, it's okay.. just treat it as a learning experience. Sleep well y'all. |

morning, all! My co-workers and I used to have a 'Pinkie Club'... Whenever one of us would get out nails done with a new color, we'd bring in the polish and share it on our pinkies.. mostly because we all used OPI, different nail salons and since we did it before the Team meeting, the pinkie was the fastest and easiest to dry..LOL (Plus it was only a 5 min. meeting!). It was just a fun and silly thing that I started with a few of my best girls, then it exploded into the entire Team. We even had two of our male mill techs that got in on it, just for fun, since it was on Saturdays.. So much fun! Jaye, not sure sometimes whether I help constructively or not.. at times I confuse my self ![]() ![]() I found this video on YouTube last night on basting, in case anyone would like to check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhwNylePFAA There are a couple parts to this, interesting concept that I haven't seen before, but will try out on my next quilt. Basically I was looking for info on basting the quilt sandwich with the zigzag method that is mentioned in the Elm Creek novels. Couldn't find it in any of my quilting books, but she shows how to do this along with rolling the fabrics up on pieces of trim boards to align better and keep them smoothed out while they are basted together. Reminded me of putting a quilt on a quilting frame, sort of.. but this is done as you sandwich the fabrics and batting together. She also has her own website, but it was so late last nite that I didn't get to go thru it all. Her videos are sort of slow and methodical, but easy to learn from. She also has one on shrinking/stretching blocks into shape if they're out of square slightly, and info on how to make your own pressing boards... I'm off to work on the baby quilts, back later... y'all have a nice afternoon! |

Good Morning. Ohhh My Gosh, talk about learning as you. Well Got the body all quilted. Now to work the borders. By days end this quilt will be finished, whew! What fun to learn lots of neat quilting terms! Scooches, ![]() At first I was reluctant to question, just because, was feeling a bit on the stupid side. But I am very glad to get over the stupid & ask, I think it was a great way to learn different techniques and a little bit about each of you, not to mention a conversation starter, lol not that this thread needed one...Definitely will have to check out the basting spray and the next one I will use the taping down. Also, now that I am at the borders, the little gathering part will be needed in a few spot. It's funny all that freaking out about the lines running on an angle Now that the first border line is sewn, UHMMM, you cant's see that, ![]() And now that I see material stretches and seems MUST Match, glad that I thought hard that day about merging a few lines. Ohwah! it did work fortunately there are only about 8 lines but it all worked out, and WE are the only ones to know this, wink wink. ![]() Thunder, i think I will hold on to the toddler quilt, because, I have a few idea's on how I'd like to see it quilted. And, I will actually love to try the hand quilting. For me, it might be much better. Since it is smallish it shouldn't take forever.... ![]() Well, Marion dear sistah with the Red toes and smashing Smile...LOL, saw you had a a Survivor sticker on your shirt! Too cute, does this now mean you are retired from the Festival?? What a great way to end this festival getting to meet some Cupits/DG Sistahs and friends...I am so sew happy for you all. Again just love that photo, and i can't wait to see your smile in June and give you giant armwraps of my own again!! for now ![]() Yep, i am thrilled to pieces to get the Quilts from the lady. They were in a bag to haul away. Well, i had the opportunity to talk with the Client about the lady. Her name was Lorraine, I was mentioning to him what a remarkable woman she seems to have been. he told me how she was a wonderful seamstress and Gardener!! She helped to create some of the gardens in and throughout The City of Chicago. I 've always been in awe of our gardens and now will view them with a much more gratitude "knowing" one of the creators...I wish I would have known this woman, but getting to know her through her home still brings me to a great respect for her love of, gardens, sewing, music and nature, she was also somewhat of an artist!! My kind of Woman. ![]() Well, i hope that you all are having a great day. Just think Three days ago i was sitting outside in a tank top sewing with the birds...LOL, got a lovely Blanket of snow over the weekend, back inside for me...But the sun is shining and it's almost 60! ![]() Love Ya's!! |

Judy, You schooch...so you don't get a pucker... Kiz, I will check that out after work... Y'all have a great rest of the day...got to go get dressed...or I will be late for work ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Kathy, I'll be downloading that vid this afternoon, when the rain starts falling! I'll remember to schooched that 'lump' next time!!![]() Sistah Judy.. you are certainly Lorraine's kindred spirit. It's really meant for you to have some of her work. You are so right, we can truly ask what may seem like stupid questions to some on other sites, but this group here have shown their willingness to help and add their brand of humor and somehow ease our fears. No you're not nuts!!! I pray the whole time when I do a quilt for someone or some child!! More like.. "Jesus, you know this is coming from my heart.. with your help maybe you could make the new owner blind to my imperfections. Amen.. and by the way, bless the user too." ![]() Oooh LK... I stopped at a quilting store today. It's the new one that's quite far from my regular one. Guess what I found?? Timeless Treasure green with gold that's a perfect match for the lap fabric. |
Jaye that is so pretty, can you get me one yard, next time yout there please???? I will send you payment. Thanks LK |
Guess what LK, I'm packing one yard to you already!! Shipping out tomorrow!! SURPRISE!!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

By the way, LK... those egg candles are made of soy. |

HELP!!! Anyone know what happened? I lost my link to DG, now says splitcoast stampers. Even if I try to enter it new comes up splitcoast stampers.. OK Never mind it is now working . That was strange, it was even listed in my favorites under the other name. Curious to know if this happened to anyone else. |
Oh goodness, I have not had that happen! That is strange! |
Mine did the same thing! Annoying! |
Judy (Seedtosser), I'm glad to hear someone else was hesitant to ask a question..... it took me over a year 'lurking' on the other Forum's quilt threads before I got brave enough to jump in. I thought I had read enough of their chat to at least have a few good legal terms under my belt , but quickly found out that quilters seem to have their own language/dictionary!! And there's more made up as we go ![]() ![]() This is a warm, fuzzy, friendly group, to be sure! I think I'm at the point in my life where I just don't give a gosh diddly darn about looking/sounding stupid. I figure if I don't ask, I'm just gonna stay stupid, ya know!!! I've joined a few other Boards, but I spend most of my time here with these ladies! Some of the others just don't give you a chance to get to know them, sort of like those stuffy quilt clubs. I would be nice to meet in one big group. These novels I'm reading have the heroine establishing a Quilter's Camp in her family's homeplace manor/estate out in the boonies of PA.. wouldn't that just be too cool!?!?!?!?!?!? |
Yep, it hit me too!! Long enough to annoy, fortunately not long enough to give up on DG for the day! Who does 'stamping' here? |
