Thunder, I saw a Dream Catcher that had little pieces of fabric gathered and tied to the strings instead of beads or whatever... really cute idea. It was on a quilting site, somewhere, but I guess I didn't bookmark it. It was just in the picture background... good idea for using little scraps of fav squares! I posted this in the 'other room', but will post here also... ANITA: Here's one you can't pass up!!!! ;-) Found this easy 10 minute block idea... not sure if it takes that long or not, but how easy to make a quick block! you could use any size squares, as they are all the same size - 5 squares to a block, the center block is 'on point' and only 3 seams!! I think she used 10" squares, but in one of her other videos, she mentions using FQ size... you could put together a quilt top with a border in nothing flat!! Oh, sometimes she turns down the inner block seam and stitches it down like a cathedral window, really nice. There is a book out there too, with other ideas. Sorry if this is old news to you all... I tend to find these cool things long after the hype has died down...LOL IMO this rates right up there with those easy pinwheels! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbTHlGGKMPM Or if you don't want to do the Youtube, here's a link with instructions/pics... Kizmo! I love it!!!! I have to copy that black, white and red theme. If I try to hand stitch the innerds, what would I need to start? What kind of thread? Quilting thread? Special quliting needles? Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends. |

If you don't have a machine yet, just use normal sewing needles and cotton thread. DO NOT get the spools that are labeled as "Quilting Thread", they have a finish on them, and IMO are hard to work with. Follow the directions with 5 squares, all the same size. Just try a test with smaller squares, they don't have to be 10" ones for a test block. Now, if you're thinking on bending back the inside square to make it look like a curved or Cathedral window, like the red centers, that is done AFTER you get the block all together. Print out the pdf from Kraftyzales link, so you have a visual to go by. After you press the test block, then gently roll back the outside edges of the middle square about 1/4" or evenly across that edge, pin it in place and either slipstitch or topstitch in place using evenly spaced stitches... Back later, catching up on Game of Thrones! PS I thought you bought a machine awhile back???? |

Kathy, have you seen episode 7 on hbogo? Pretty interesting. |
Dang it Kathy, I just didn't need to see another really neat black and white. Just finished one for my daughter. I need to figure how to run out of fabric just as the quilt is finished. I have a bit left, then get a bit more and son of a gun if I don't end up again with just a bit left. |

AWESOME Kiz thanks for sharing!!! My 'New" room is almost done...needs a little finessing....here and there................well probably a lot of finess !!!! but I can actually start to sew again now ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() not a lot of floor space left, but that is ok....and I will be getting a few pieces of that insulation board, and making a new design wall, next pay check. It will go on the wall to the left of the sewing machine It's not High class, but it's mine...all mine.....and I think I am gonna like it !! ![]() |

Linda - no, haven't seen Ep 7. yet. Meant to do that earlier, but forgot amidst everything else I'm trying to fit in this week! Tried to register on hbogo, but they're saying that my new registration is in error, that we already have an account? Got to check with hubby in the morning, 'cuz if he is already set up with them and saw the next Episode without me - he's in big trouble!! LOL (or it could be operator error... ) I just love this show, and was giving a standing ovation when they dumped that molten gold on Viserys' head ![]() ![]() ![]() Thunder - am so entirely jealous of your new room! and your stash...... there are no words!! This new block would make some extremely fast charity quilts, I'm thinkin'.... I have plenty of kid's prints in my stash at the moment and using large squares w/3 seams, a nice size would go together quickly. Karen - I thought the same thing when I found that image... but it would make a nice king size top without taking a whole year to do... my oldest son picked out a pattern from Keepsake with lots of piecing. I'm taking it to the LQS that has alot of batiks, as I think they would look the best. And my married son and DIL are wanting sofa quilts for their new theatre room in their basement.. Hubby is wondering when he gets one for the bed and a flannel one for the living room sofa... The problem isn't making them, it's finding the time to sit down and stay there! Just found the 10 min. quilt pattern at Keepsake Quilting - it shows a thin sashing around each block... hmmm These are the ones the boys want for Christmas: ![]() ![]() This 10 Minute block is made from rectangles instead of squares: ![]() |

Oh, I like that one too! Thunder love your new room! You have been working hard! |

No Kizmo, I don't have the room to put a sewing machine right now. I have an older one that was given to me as a gift. I think it works but I have not tried to use it yet. Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends. |

Kiz, I love those trees !! I have a tree pattern in a book that I have had for at least 20 years....keep saying I will make it...as soon as I get good at 1/2 sq triangles ![]() ![]() did some for flag blocks, in the row swap.....still not good enough at them to try the trees!!! but I am gonna keep on practicing ![]() ![]() |

Just re read above.....I love "quilting" thread.....Hand quilting thread...use it a lot....coat with bees wax...stitch stitch stitch..... |

Those are both beautiful Kathy, isn't it amazing that as our children are grown they are back to thinking we can do anything? |

I tend to cheat a little on those 1/2 squares... I cut slightly bigger, sew together and square to size. It takes longer but is easier on my nerves! I was hoping for a simpler pattern, like stars or DP9, etc, even had pics of black/white/navy/red etc combos with patterns that I knew wouldn't take a rocket scientist to put together. But after going thru a stack of quilt mags, he kept coming back to that one, saying " but I don't have anything in those colors, I really like the greens and golds", so Mom couldn't say no.. LOL Kristen wants more 'artsy, contemporary' patterns, but she still likes the pink/chocolate combos. I found one LQS here that has tons of those colors, so I just have to put some together that blend.. Micah, on the other hand, (my youngest) is very 'hands on', not afraid to try to fix or make anything, even sews on occasion. I'm thinking the 10 minute block could work for his, so he doesn't have to wrestle Kristen's away from her... Thunder, I tried using some of that coated thread and spent more time untangling it than sewing. Finally switched back to all cotton to finish up a small piece I was working on. The main reason I suggested that to Anita is that maybe a beginner would have as much trouble as I did and we definitely are waiting for Anita to post some project pics!!! Karen, I totally agree!!!! ![]() Night All! |
well you definitely need to use shorter lengths of thread, and the wax is an absolute must...... and I have to do the cheat on those squares too....but I still end up sewing (chopping) off points when I put a bunch of them together.....???? ![]() ![]() |

I'm excited again Kizmo! I will have to try some stitches while I'm at work. At least I can get the squares cut out and stitch them while I'm at work. I think I even have an iron and ironing borad at work. I think I can remember how the stitching goes but I need to print out the instructions.
