Yayyyy it's July!! We'll be celebrating America's birthday soon and I hope that Kel closes the shop on that day, so for once, I'd love to go to a big city and catch a parade!! Thumb of 2012-07-01/Heavenscape/d116ad

On a serious note, anyone heard from Kathy Kiz. Hope her net is not down due to a black out.
Hope that's the issue, and not something serious. Sure miss her.

... Yep, I'm here! Thanks for missin' me!!! Lovey dubby We had a really big storm come thru here Friday evening around 6pm. Not much rain but plenty of tree-bending winds, lots of people around here had uprooted trees, etc. We didn't have any damage, other than stuff getting tossed around as the wind blew in a circle around the house. We stood out on the front porch and watched it, keeping our fingers crossed that the big tree limbs out front didn't break loose and take out our power lines or porch. Power went out at 6:15pm, just now came back on - 32 hours of no electric. Paper from WV stated that over 2 million were without power, so we just had to wait our turn. Our mail carrier told us that it was possible to wait between 5-7 days for everyone's electric to be restored and to store up some water, just in case we lost water pressure like the neighboring village across the bridge from us.
All in all, we did ok, neighbors and local dog walkers and strollers checking in on everyone else, just glad it's over!

Hubby is so happy to get the computers and AC back on.... Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing And me... I'm making a new list of 'must haves' for emergency situations!!!

it's funny/sad when I compared what I used to have back in IN and when the kids were little and what I have now-- good thing nothing drastic happened! I kept thinking: if the trees take out the roof or front windows, we don't have any spare tarps/plastic to cover them. IF the weather was worse, we don't have a weather/emergency radio (plenty of battery back up radios, but no fresh batteries) IF I would've purchased that portable gas grill and extra tanks when they were on sale, I'd have something to cook outside with, instead of heating up the house more than it already is, IF I would've just bought that deep freezer to put in the basement, we would have a place to freeze extra ice jugs to keep all the food cold longer, IF it gets any hotter in this house, we could sleep in the basement, but the air mattresses work off the vacuum attachment (electric). and so on.... Hubby has never really had to deal with this kind of thing, so his way of dealing with it was to suggest throwing out all the food, locking up the house and going to a hotel..LOL
I have a Master Checklist that has a lot of things on it, that are interesting. I can remember seeing an Emergency List years ago, but it was mainly water, prepackaged power bars, nuts, etc and plenty of medical supplies. The new ones suggest simple tools like screwdrivers and wrenches/plier, bleach, face masks. Extra disposable diapers or feminine pads can be used for wounds, disposable gloves, etc. When you're dealing with no power or whatever for maybe a day, that's one thing.. when you're facing a possible multiple days timeperiod, that's a whole new story. I just can't imagine being in Katrina or the wildfire areas or such and being caught unprepared, but it's something to think about now.

Now - hubby is diabetic and is on trial insulin, which needs to stay cold. Also on Byetta, which needs to stay cold... We have cool paks and such, but that was one thing I forgot about until he mentioned it. Extra clothes, sheets, hand sanitizer, soap, personal items I remember, but freaked when I couldn't find what I wanted (it was there, I just had to look for it). A manual can opener, instant coffee, disposable cups/plates (which most people have, but since I got divorced I only stock Corelle and glass. Lived too many years on Tupperware and Burger King cups... LOL) Plastic tablecovers for multiple uses, a list of phone numbers for electric, water, gas companies and insurance. All these we had on the computer files in Documents, and our cell phones... but when there's no electric or cell service and your company is not listed in the local phone book....

When the mail carrier suggested storing back extra water in case we were still waiting 5 days later and a possible loss of water pressure (or in my old days, the water pump in the well) we really had to get inventive finding things to fill with water. Fortunately, we had buckets and those big tubs to store drinks in, along with pitchers and such to fill about 50 gallons worth. I was trying to make sure that there was enough to wash Hubby's clothes, or have enough to take sponge baths, along with washing dishes or whatever. If we would have had little kids, it would have been tougher, although when I think on something long enough I can figure something out.

Our cell service would pop in and out, or when it went dead, we combined a drive for ice supplies with charging our phones in the car. Problem with that was-if you waste gas running around for that, and the gas stations aren't pumping due to electric issues-you'll be out of gas to go to work with. Hubby's company has big backup generators, like most companies, so he would have to go to work. ..AND Rolling on the floor laughing he parks his truck in the detached garage, and since the garage door is an electric opener unit (and the 2nd door does not open, even manually) he couldn't open the garage to get his truck out. Rolling on the floor laughing He could have taken my Jeep which is parked outside, but it never dawned on him until I pointed out that I couldn't open the garage to get the rake out and extra buckets to clean up the branches and such in the yard..

It was amazing how differently our past lives affect how we take charge in a disaster situation.. Growing up, my family seemed like it was in disaster mode most of the time, having to do without or find a way around it. His family were well blessed in that they never had to deal with alcoholism, family issues, legal problems, etc, but being well blessed didn't teach simple common sense in a disaster, IMO. So I'm pretty well zonked after all this stress, can't wait to sleep in my own bed tonite!
Most of the web links that I've been researching is basically the same as far as items. This is a good one, as well as the Red Cross one:

http://www.ready.gov/document/family-supply-list

http://www.redcross.org/portal/site/en/menuitem.53fabf6cc033...

Edit: My master list is a pdf, which won't load here. If you like I can email it to you... Sorry I've rambled a long reply, but it's something that could happen to anyone in a moment's notice and sometimes we don't always finish those 'one of these days I need to ......' lists..

I think we all are guilty of not keeping our "extras" update or together. I know Kim and I are and if we had a hurricane...well it would be trouble. Thanks for the reminder and I think maybe we will just get ourselves together. We have the battery/weather radio...no batteries, do have 2 grills that use propane tanks (small type0 and yes, we do have the tanks for a change.

I would love to have your list Kathy. Thanks for offering...I think you have my email addresses.

Morning Sistahs! What's for breakfast?

Kathy, we have the same situation here. We got power back on Saturday evening just before dark. We didn't lose any food and no damage to my home, however, there's still alot of people/businesses with no power. This area has run out of ice. Some of the restaurants who do have power are running out of food. Generators are very hard to ome by right now. I'm so thankful the second storm blew over us and that my mother agreed to stay with us. I think she thinks she's imposing on us but I cannot stand the htought of her sitting in a hot, dark house with no power.

morning ladies! Had a few surges last night, but nothing major. Winds sure did blow and lots of lightning. At least I don't have to water anything this morning, but with this heat I may have to later today! Accuweather has cactus for icons instead of a hot sun...LOL Humidity is high too.

Anita, I know we discussed this before.. do you use a juicer or a blender for your veggie drinks? I've been online all morning looking at reviews for them, but unless I want to spend $$$ for a Vitamix, I'm not sure whether to go blender or juicer. Blender seems more likely, as it is a multitasker and I'm a big fan of KitchenAids, but they aren't getting good reviews anymore. New models aren't like the old ones.. AND I could use some recipes or whatever you go by as far as basics and add-ins... please....

Lavonne, I think you posted one of your cubits, but I can't seem to locate it at the moment. Did you have smoothie or juice recipes in there?

Kathy, I use the Blendtec blender for my smoothies. I looked at all the different blenders but decided on the Blendtec and I have not been disappointed. I have a juicer but prefer smoothies over juicing. The Blendtec was alot more than I wanted to spend but you can make ice cream, soups and juices with it. Mine did come with a recipe book. I can scan it and send you some recipes if you want?

What I like about the smoothies is the versatility and smoothies are more filling than juices. I add flax meal and lecithin to my smoothies. You can add protein powder/ cacao, soy milk or other ingredients depending on your nutritional needs. I make a full blender (48 oz I think) and I can drink it throughtout the day. I usually have one for breakfast as my meal, one with lunch or dinner or between meals. If I have any left over, I drink it for breakfast. I recently tried mine with soy milk which gave it a little sweet taste but I prefer it without. Daily, I use 2 cups of spinach, 2 cups of carrots and 2 cups of frozen mixed fruit with 16 oz of water and 2 tbsp of lecithin and flax meal. Every once in a while I add a dab of Ginger. I use the same veggies because those are two of my favorites. I may change the fruit on occassion which changes the flavor completely. I plan to try to live off the smoothies and some protein for 30 days just to see how my weight, glucose level and cholesterol changes. I really like smoothies, Kathy.

Barb, just sent yours again... I forgot the '1'.. Confused Still have your old comcast addy, can I delete that one?

Lady M....... got your blocks today, absolutely love em! Where in the world did you find JD fabric????? Good thing they don't make sheets and pillowcases with that pattern... *Blush* *Blush* *Blush* Thank you so much!

Anita, since I'm not a smoothie fan, this will be new for me. I used to do protein whey shakes and freezies at the gym, but since I moved here, it's not in our budget. However, we do have a GNC here for the whey mix, and I really want to try a green smoothie. The made from scratch ones are going to taste different from ready mades or from restaurants, and the last one we ordered at a local restaurant was pretty to look at, but between the two of us we couldn't find a flavor in it anywhere.. it was a total waste of $4... So yes, if you would share a couple recipes that are the 'tried and true' type, I would appreciate it. There isn't any type of fruit that I don't like, and I'm curious about the ones with veggies in them.. Still looking for blenders, can't decide how much $$ to part with.. Whistling

no, didn't dawn on me to look for something like that on CL.. but it would have to be brand new, I have a thing about buying used food/drink machines. You just don't know what people really used them for.... We have a Freecycle group here that I keep up with, and plenty of secondhand type storefronts, I just haven't been to check them out lately.
But thanks for the suggestion, I'll pull up CL and see what's in there...
