I hope you all are doing well. Stay warm, dry and safe. you all are always on my mind ![]() Life without garlic , just plain stinks ! |

Sue, you're doing something positive for sure!! Getting positive energy going there by having an eye candy when you're exercising!! ![]() ![]() I went over LK, so far lots of applique books. They never expire! Will be keeping an eye for sure. Barb, Susan, Sue..Marion.. hoping for good weather for you all! Happy Fat Tuesday sistahs!! Jean, celebrations like this makes me miss Louisiana. You can definitely say that one doesn't have to be in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Practically every parish would be doing its' own thing. Floats.. music.. and in some rural towns, chicken hunting on horseback. Where costumed revelries would be chasing just released chickens for a big communal gumbo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJjnClUN4lw |

Jaye...here are the results from the infamous Spanish Town Parade....A favorite for years and perhaps best captures the frivolity of the season. http://theadvocate.com/news/5150908-123/smiley-junk-food-hon... What I don't know is why books are written. |

Thanks Jean, that's another La. festivity I have missed. Oh I can get serious fat fast there!! ![]() ![]() I think Louisianans would do anything to throw a big party!! Another one that I had missed is the Lake Charles Contraband Day. |

http://www.contrabanddays.com/ There it is, another reason to Partaaaaaay. (Even for the non imbibing good folks!) |

here is a bit o trivia for you... More than 400 Louisiana festivals occur each year – which makes it easy to see why Louisiana is often called the Festival Capital of America. We celebrate just about every crop harvested, every indigenous dish, every type of music that's played here – ranging from Cajun and zydeco to Delta blues, New Orleans jazz, Louisiana's own swamp pop, country, salsa and more. Excellent Louisiana food is a given at any festival. And as always, Louisiana festivals offer abundant opportunities for meeting new friends http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_festivals_in_Louisiana What can I say....we like to have a good time... le bon temps roule, cher (let the good time roll, darlin) What I don't know is why books are written. |
Oh yes, blame it on the laissez les bon temps rouler mentality Jean. Besides faithfully attending Breaux Bridge Crawfish festival every year.. I had enjoyed the Strawberry festival, stocked up some wine from that one. Took runner up prizes in the photography competitions @ the Sugar Cane in New Iberia. Got really drunk (before becoming a Baptist) @ the Delcambre Shrimp Festival. Had a hoppin' good time in Rayne, for the Frog Festival. Had great corn ice cream in Bunkie Corn Festival. Henderson't crab festival wasn't a big hit, but love partying with ex' family. Made new foreign (anyone from North La, is a foreigner) at the Lafayette French International Festival. Love the craft shows there. And don't forget the Native Indian Festival in Marksville. These are just a few that I can think of at the top of my head. Kel couldn't understand why I never want to go to this town's Yam festival.. oops.. forgot about that one in Opelousas. Most festivals in Louisiana stretched for 3 days.. not here. only 1 day and 1 band stand. Jean, you're making me want to move back to Louisiana! |
It is a hard place to leave....much less forget...and we always show up in the top 20 of places with the happiest people lists....happiness and joy are choices and the folks here choose them over stress and misery. One of the amazing things: post-Katrina, I volunteered at a couple of the shelters housing folks from New Orleans. Folks emotionally battered and bruised, some physically, still found reasons to smile, share a story, a memory or a joke....the overall mindset seemed to be "yeah, I got me some troubles, but I am alive and the sun is shining and tomorrow will be a better day"...lots of good lessons there. What I don't know is why books are written. |

Never been to Louisiana, other than driving through, but never stopped. Sounds like a great p lace to party! |
Like any state, we have our problems, but the overall ambiance is one of warmth, helpfulness and above all friendliness....and the food is dynamite ![]() ![]() What I don't know is why books are written. |
You state that well, Jean! Louisiana is just not New Orleans.. you got to stop at one of the small towns to feel it's uniqueness, LK. Even Kel's taken aback by the people, not only the culture. I may not be Louisiana born, but I call her home. Want a real tailgating experience? The Dawgs have nothing on LSU!! Sorry Charleen! |

Today our cafeteria had pancakes for "fat tuesday" and I had already had breakfast....... but for lunch they had Mardi Gras food, and I had some cornbread, dirty rice, sweet potatoes, turducken, and Brussel sprouts! I'd never had dirty rice, nor turducken before, but YUMMMMMMMMM ![]() so, I took home 2 dinners for Bob & I tonight (I'd already brought leftover tuna casserole for lunch - yummmmmm - will HAVE to share that recipe with you - includes white wine!) ![]() So, tomorrow I fast....... for Lent! |
Susan, you forgot to bring along your "Tony Cachere's Creole Seasoning"! That. along with Tabasco, is a Louisiana staple ![]() Glad you got to experience Cajun food. I'm biased towards my late ex' Dirty Rice. She had smothered eggplants and lots of liver in hers. ![]() |
The owner of the Cafe at work said dirty rice is supposed to be made with chicken livers, but she doesn't. ![]() I don't know what seasoning they put in the food, Jaye....... ![]() |
She's right, Susan. Traditionally it is made with chicken livers. There's this chain restaurant here "Bojangles" that serve faux Cajun food. I nearly threw up when I had their dirty rice. No trace of liver, just sausage. Their spicy chicken was soooo bad. Popeye's is still the real thing. To get Popeye's I have to drive down to Georgia. So please, if you see a Bojangles anywhere, avoid it like a plague. Bojangles sure fooled a bunch of Carolinians. What made me so mad, was Jake Delhomme, a Breaux Bridge native, once a QB with the Panthers, 'represented' Bojangles. He's sure dancing to the bank tho.. |
We have a Popeye's here..... but it's a health food store lol Sell vitamins, etc |

I think one of the things that just boggles my mind is when you see restaurants offer Jambalaya....served on a bed of rice!!!??? Jambalaya is seasoned rice with game, pork/sausage, chicken or seafood added to it...it was a staple of the slaves on plantations and meat was a very scarce commodity for them. The Jamba part of the word is from the French for ham...Jambon....after hogs were butchered, the leftover bits were given to the slaves and they used it to add flavor to the seasoned rice, The Laya part comes from the Spanish paella....an attempt by New World Spaniards to make paella without saffron. So, if someone offers up Jambalaya on a bed of rice...tell'em No Thanks. http://stuffcajunpeoplelike.wordpress.com/2008/05/27/32-jamb... What I don't know is why books are written. |
