|Sharon and Neal, I think I associate all of that stuff with Arkansas and maybe West Virginia. Kentucky is associated with incredibly green lawns and beautiful horses in my mind.
Barb, Russians have a strong aversion to Gypsies, just as many other nationalities do, so I was raised with warnings to stay as far away from them as possible. They also got blamed for anything bad that happened in our neighborhood. If a dog was missing or a house was ransacked, Gypsies were automatically suspected of having stolen the dog and burglarized the house.
I have met quite a few Gypsies in my life and all the good ones had severed ties with their community.
But I do love Gypsy music.
As for the Irish travelers, I had never even known they had a connection to Gypsies until now. I've been hearing about them for years, mainly in connection with home repair scams. I've seen several reports on investigative journalism shows. They generally drive around in groups, offering homeowners quality repairs at a discount. They then perform shoddy repairs or none at all and charge far more than a legitimate contractor would. In addition, while part of the group keeps the homeowner engaged in a conversation outside, one or two of the others go inside the home and steal everything of value.
I never thought of them as Gypsies, just as thieving bastards.
And they don't have any music to love.
