Legendary UGA football coach Vince Dooley is giving a talk at the Knoxville Botanical Garden on Friday, April 8 about his new book - "Vince Dooley's Garden: a Horticultural Journey of a Football Coach".
For more info for the KBG talk, call 865-862-8717, email [email protected], or go to the website at

There's a nice article in the Knox News Sentinel today. My favorite quote is:

"If I had become obsessed with gardening while I was coaching football, I probably wouldn't have coached football for very long."

Yup, he's hooked. He took some classes with Dirr and Armitage, and there was no turning back. I had the chance to meet him briefly at one of the UGA Horticultural Open House days. We weren't able to stay for it because of time constraints, but he invited the whole group back to his house to see his gardens. I'll have to get the book to see all his garden photos.

"The most serious gardening I do would seem very strange to an onlooker, for it involves hours of walking round in circles,
apparently doing nothing. What I'm doing is forcing myself to evaluate certain areas....
Only during these quiet moments does a good idea suddenly occur."
~ Helen Dillon, Irish garden writer
