OK, less exotic than most places listed. My husband has a bee up his butt about wanting to go to Michigan this year. Neither of us has ever been there. We're on vacation in a few weeks but have made no plans yet. Having trouble finding any place that meets my standards, or even comes close. (many have no dishwasher or microwave, double or bunk beds, bring your own linens, etc). Sounds one baby steps above camping to me which is appealing to me as.... having someone poke my eye out...

Would like a house on water, either Lake Mi or a smaller one would be OK. A small place is fine, it's only the two of us. Most are of course booked at this late date but even so can't find many I find acceptable.

Any suggestions where to look? I've used mostly VRBO and vacationrentals.com

We love roughing it such as camping but it sure isn't for everyone.
I have never been to MI so can't be of much help. I guess you have tried googling bed and breakfasts? That would be my only suggestion.

Thanks, Candee. I found a place on VRBO and booked it a few days ago. It's a house on a little lake (has dishwasher, microwave, linens supplied). If I can just sit around and read books and sleep it will be OK with me.

It will be a different vacation for us- we usually head for a Florida beach.

We were in the Glen Arbor area a couple years ago and it was definitely a little piece of heaven.

It was just stunning and beautiful. Lots of flowers, beautiful vineyards, gorgeous!

And the water was turquoise.

Thanks, Vic. I've heard that about the clean, clear water. We rented a house on a little lake close to Lake Michigan. I'm looking forward to it. Cooler summer temps will be different for us, we're not used to that. After the recent hot weather here in Ohio, (heat index near 100° most of last week here), I think it will be a nice change of pace.

The place is Big Platte Lake. It's near Sleeping Bear Dunes. If anyone has any suggestions for things we should see/do there, I'm all ears. Apparently kayaking on the Platte River is big, but crawling into a kayak scares me. A canoe maybe, but not a kayak.

We went to Sleeping Bear Dunes. It's beautiful there. The story of it will make you cry Sad

Lake Leelanau is close to where you will be. It was fun to visit and I had the BEST sandwich there made on pretzel bread. Sounds weird but it was GOOD!

Be sure to take sweatshirts for evening. It gets really cool in the evening after the sun sets.

Have a wonderful time!

Sounds like quite a beautiful adventure you are going to have. Will be looking forward to the story of the dunes and lots of photos upon your return.
Cool weather would be welcome here in west MD as well as some days of that wet stuff, what is that called again LOL!

Hot here, too. Temps down to the mid 80s, last week it was in the 90s with heat index around 100. Incredible humidity last week is somewhat lower but it's HOT! I worked in the yard this morning. I was out there by 8:30 and by 9:00 was a dripping ball of sweat. I worked until 1:00, couldn't take another minute.

Bit better here today in the high 80's. Been 103-106 for the entire past week and heading there again this week and not a drop of precip, my water bill will be more than a new car LOL!

I forgot that I didn't report in again.

It was a nice vacation, very restful. The house was pretty...unimpressive. I'm used to staying in much nicer places on vacation. But I guess it met our needs. We didn't do much. Swam during the day, or sat on the beach reading. We read quite a bit, a treat for us. We both like to read but don't find much time at home to just sit and relax and read.

Lake Platt was pretty, nice and clean and clear. It was rocky as you walked in from the shore, but quickly became a nice sandy bottom.

The dunes are impressive. It's hard to describe their enormous size. Here's a shot looking straight down- notice the size of the people. I wouldn't go down- not sure I could ever get back to the top!

OMG that is a long way downnnnnnnnnnn! I see what you mean. Glad you got some R&R - most of the time I think it doesn't matter so much where one is, but rather who is with you!

Thanks for the nice pictures, Karen.

It looks like a beautiful spot. I, too, prefer to go on a vacation where I can lay in the sun and read a good book.

vic,
I just saw Pretzel Bread in the store the other day. What was on your sandwich?

The menu offered about everything you could think of for your sandwich. I "think" I ordered ham and cheese. It was yummy!
