I have a nice sized flock of mixed chickens. I actually have more chckens than I need or want and would like to downsize. The chickens I want to keep or the chicks I have in the brooder bins right now. They won't be laying for a while yet so I will keep the rest until then. I have 6 Golden Comet chicks and 6 EEs. The Golden Comets are a sex link hybrid, meaning they are able to be told apart ( pullets from roos ) at hatching. They lay a very large brown egg. The EE ( Easter eggers ) are chickens that lay blue or green eggs. All mine are pullets. I already have a big EE roo I call Gumbo. The Golden Comets are only for eggs for eating. Being a hybrid they won't breed true so I won't hatch any of their eggs.

This big egg is from my Golden Comet hen. This egg is sitting in a "large" carton and the other eggs are "large" eggs. That egg is a bit bigger than she normally lays but her eggs are always way bigger than the other hens.

Wow, that's a mega-egg!

I'd love to see your birds, especially if you have update pics as the brooder babies grow up.

Well, if chickens were legal here I'd come take some of the "extras" off your hands. But I have to wait for the city council to do something before I can keep hens of my own.

It's sad that in these hard economic times the government makes laws so you can't feed yourself. There is something wrong with that!

Actually, a lot of governments have been overturning those laws lately, which were passed decades ago. I think the economy is definitely part of it, but self-sufficiency in general is becoming more popular, so they're responding to that.

I just wish the process was moving faster in my city.

Beautiful birds!

Thanks. I need to get a better pen built for them but all in good time.

I hope they hurry with the law in your town. It's so satisfying to have chickens and they are very entertaining.

A friend built me a chicken house by his barn. I have a horse at his barn so I am there every day feeding. I feed the chickens then and pick up my eggs. I only have half as many chickens now. I am down to 6 RSLs which were sold to us as Golden Comets. They are laying now but they are bullies so I am not fond of them. I have 4 EE pullets. One of them is laying every 3 or 4 days. I kept my Golden Comet hen and my Roundhead game hen. I also have 2 EE roos, 1 with muffs and 1 without. One of my EE pullets has muffs. I still have my bantam roo, Trey, and his hen, Henny Penny. We have a Golden Comet roo we want to be rid of. I was trying to give away 14 laying hens and a part EE roo but was having no luck. I ended up making a great trade with them. Got 1 gallon of fresh cows milk, 1/2 gallon of fresh goats milk and 2 pounds of fresh butter. I have surely enjoyed them all and my chicken feed bill is cut in half now. Best part is I don't have to climb up the steep hill to the chicken pen anymore. Life is good!!!

Sounds like a perfect setup for you! I think I'd want to have them on my own property, but then again, we don't have hills here Hilarious!

Did you sell any eggs when you had the 14 extra hens? That seems like a lot for one family to use. And the fresh dairy products sound amazing - I guess you both won on that deal.

We are very pleased to have the fresh eggs even though they are a bit small right now, they are AAA Grade and have an Awesome taste . I don't think I would want my Chickens or any of my animals at another place that I had to go to and tend to them, if it was on my place that might be different .LOL

I agree with Bit the fresh dairy would be awesome to have .

We don't own he place we live on. We are ministers and this is a parsonage so it's different in our case. My friend built me a really nice hen house and I appreciate it very much.

It's not an easy life but we make the best of it. It does have it's rewards but they are not monetary. Very few ministers live the lifestyle you see on TV.

Thanks, Sally. I enjoy talking about them.

I got 4 eggs today which is good because it has been overcast th last 3 days and it gets dark here at 6pm. I got 3 brown eggs and a green egg. I was getting a blue egg and I don't know if the same hen is laying darker eggs or if it is another hen coming to the party. I love the colored eggs. I have wanted colored eggs since I first read about them. I was starting to think my Easter Eggers would never start laying. They were late bloomers to be sure. LOL

It does make it easier as long as they don't break any eggs.
