I will have to try that! "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Seuss |

I dont understand that Shirley can you tell me more? Squint your eyes and look in the mirror or the change in your view from squinting your eyes shows you on the face that you are drawing where the shadows should be? |
|
|||
Squint at a posing subject you are drawing and you can see where the shadows should fall. They show clearly for you. I wanted to know if you ever heard of that. I remember hearing that in the long ago past. shirleyt shirleyt wanna be artist bad visit me at Beginners At ART [url=http://cubits.orgshirleytBeginnersAtArt] shirleyt Beginners At Art |

You know there is like a whisper of a memory of someone saying that before but i dont think I understood it then either. That must be the trick that I need . I am going to have to get my pencils out and a face to draw and try it .... |

This is a great thread! I will find that ebay purchase of 10#s of Pastels. Thanks ![]() The difference between adventure and adversity is attitude. Be positive, be happy. |

Jeannie this is great .. I can not wait to try a portrait of PP. I am determined to learn to do at least a half way decent portrait of him. shirleyt shirleyt wanna be artist bad visit me at Beginners At ART [url=http://cubits.orgshirleytBeginnersAtArt] shirleyt Beginners At Art |

I have never tried a portrait! In the past (many moons ago), I did lots of cats and dogs - somehow that seems less scary than people ![]() "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Seuss |

Am I confused? I thought you were doing the above portrait. Anyway I am going to try that while on vacation, If the weather lets us get to our little cabin reserved at Steel Creek. shirleyt shirleyt wanna be artist bad visit me at Beginners At ART [url=http://cubits.orgshirleytBeginnersAtArt] shirleyt Beginners At Art |

Oh no - those portraits are Dorothy's. She was showing me how she layered in the shadows and highlights (I had copy-pasted the posts from another thread on another website). "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Seuss |

Next Lesson: Using only two colors. Okay, I am not very good at drawing milk jugs and glasses! LOL But I am going to show this anyway. The purpose of this lesson is to introduce color mixing techniques, while still practicing tones and values. I'm not sure I did very well with this: "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Seuss |

Lest you think, from that last drawing, that I really have absolutely no talent (LOL) here is a sketch I did this evening of my cat Thunder. We lost him to kidney disease 6 years ago. I really enjoy these tutorials you are doing. I will be referring to them as soon as I get a few things finish. You are really good. ![]() The difference between adventure and adversity is attitude. Be positive, be happy. |

Lol - thanks for saying that I am 'good'!! I do enjoy drawing, but have not done it for so many years, that I am out of practice. I really like having this beginners forum - the Art and Artists forum has so many talented people, that I would feel really intimidated posting *anything* there. Maybe someday I will feel I am good enough ![]() "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Seuss |

You are talented too! I'm working on Landscape quilt and ordering Coleus for myself and a lady in Sweden. When I get these done, I'll be here with my pastels. ![]() The difference between adventure and adversity is attitude. Be positive, be happy. |

Oh goody! I can't wait to have some else "in class" with me! "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Seuss |

I tried my chalk pastels on canvas and made a mess. I tried a landscape on the colored paper and it did better. I am still working on it. I can post it for critique when I am done. ok shirleyt shirleyt wanna be artist bad visit me at Beginners At ART [url=http://cubits.orgshirleytBeginnersAtArt] shirleyt Beginners At Art |

I think that's one of the things Dorothy talks about above - using a drawing surface that has the right "tooth" to hang on to the pastels. My DH burned out his mixer making bread dough, and bought a new one to the tune of $215!! I went shopping on http://www.dickblick.com in retaliation ![]() "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Seuss |

Jeannie, thanks for the invitation... I'm delighted to see your progress, and you have an excellent teacher in Dorothy. She has a wonderful drawing hand, and you can have no better instructor than she will be. She's a terrific painter as well. I am a painter first, and my drawing is not my strong point. I do have one pastel drawing I did many years ago when I caught my children in a solemn moment (kids and solemn moments don't exactly seem to go well together)...and I'll find pictures of it to show you maybe tomorrow if you would like to see them. In the meantime, you have the start of an excellent cubit, and you are doing a good job with the progress you're making in your own work. Don't be afraid to join us in Art and Artists...most everyone there would be more than happy to answer your questions, or to give you advice or whatever you need. Dorothy is there too, and you already know how kind she is. We are all beginners at one time or another, so we know how you feel. Thanks again for inviting me, I joined your cubit, so I'll be back soon. I taught art for a long time and there's nothing I like better than to see people learning everything they can learn about art. It's a good thing for all of us. Keep on drawing, you are going to love it. Sharon |

Sharon, thank you so much for joining our cubit! Shirley and I are still working on refining it (getting links to other artist's cubits set up, etc.), so be sure to check back often! I have joined several of the other artist's cubits, and have been in awe of some of the work there! Definately one way to learn is to study other artist's pieces. Thanks again!
