Yeah! I'm a Charley's girl!
I've found the #1 draw to my yard is water. After that is food; seed, suet, nuts, fruit and even meat scraps for some birds like thrashers and roadrunners.
The more variety of food the more birds but some birds that never visit for food still come for water. Some birds prefer a ground level bird bath and some prefer a pedestal while others like the hummingbirds like a wet leaf to bathe in or even the gentle stream from a garden hose.

A draw for a few birds in my yard is ground cover (bark chips, leaves, and other such dead stuff). The spotted towhees like to scratch around in that but they don't use the feeder. Some birds that catch insects (e.g. black phoebe) like a pole to perch on.

Angele, have you ever seen a thrasher take a bath in the dew in your yard? I saw that once and wondered how common it was.

Kelli, dew is extremely uncommon here. I bet they would if we had it.
I love to see the hop scratch of the Towhees, so cute. We have the Say's Phoebes here, I see them perched on signs and fence posts.

I think I heard a woodpecker today. Trees on the property might be something they use. I try to have native plants that offer something. Texas Persimmon, Brasil and Chile Pequin produce something they can eat.

Oh, I got a look at the woodpecker today. Looks like a Golden-fronted Woodpecker...so pretty! It was at the birdfeeder...reading up on it, I guess it was eating sunflower seeds. Maybe I'll put something else out for it tomorrow. Might be a pair...I saw red on the head the first time. Later, one without red...at least, I think so.

Good Morning Everyone,
I have a question maybe someone here knows. I make my own bird feed suet those types of bird foods. I am wondering if anyone knows how to render pork fat? I bought part of a pig and have like a ten pound bag of just fat. I want to melt it to use to make my bird food any ideas? The woodpeckers are hungry here....

It is pretty easy, with that much I'd do it in an oven set at about 225°.
Cut the fat into small pieces - add enough to a large heavy roasting pan to at least cover the bottom. When the fat starts to melt, add more pieces until roaster is about half full.
This can also be done in a crock pot but since you have so much I'd go with a larger pan in the oven.

Pork fat burns easily so you have to watch it carefully.
You can strain the rendered fat & freeze it while still hot. I separate it into amounts I'll need for the bird cakes.

Not all those who wander are lost.
Not a bird watcher, well, I do see them a lot and enjoy them.
We try to attract hummingbirds with plants and get quite
a few most years as they migrate through. some of them
get really protective of THEIR food. Can be vicious little
things.
I have a woodpecker I will be glad to send your way. Certain
times of the year he/she wakes me up hammering on the
metal gutters right outside my bedroom.
Mainly just wanted to say hi and I do enjoy seeing your
pictures and reading how to attract all things of nature.
