I have found that I have more success feeding the Nut and Berry mix. I also feed meal worms in the Spring for my bluebirds. Rosebud, I purchased the Looker bluebox from Wild Bird, so I can peep in at the babies. I cannot wait! I will try and get some nice pics later to post.
The gold finch are beginning to get their bright yellow now. Always a nice sign of Spring but today it is still in the 30s. Brrr It will be warming up later this afternoon.

Can I jump in here?

Angele - I actually know where Elephant Butte is.. used to go to this one wonderful Mexican restaurant there in T or C when I was a kid (grew up in Las Cruces). Actually used to fish regularly there at Cavallo dam. :) but this was years and years ago (about 20+). Anyways, that's an awesome shot of a roadrunner there! Last couple of times I've been down that way, hadn't seen a roadrunner, but for the most part, I was on major roads (I25, then up into the mountains near Ruidoso.. no roadrunners there).

I feed the chickadees & sparrows in the winter.. this past summer I had a TON of goldfinches, so I stocked up on nyjer seed (thistle). Everyone seems to like that.

I'd like a feeder that is critter-proof! The coons and other wild critters usually tear the feeders up so bad out here! I've got a large baffle above a metal feeder hung on one of those metal pole with shepherd's hook in the back yard, however and it seems to keep them off pretty good. But the feeder just isn't designed very well for the seeds to come out well at the bottom to fill the lower tray. I'm thinking about taking a drill and enlarging that opening.

I know what you mean Linda & I did the same thing --- same situation with the baffle & shepard's hook. Now, I got one of the copper feeders & I can't say why but they've never touched it. I got the one that looks like the open "fortune cookie" & no critters except birds have been on it. I did see some squirrels trying a few times but they couldn't manage. I think the roof is too slippy for them to get a hold.

I'm not getting old, I'm 'maturing'
I apologize for possibly not posting correctly. I've joined the Birds cubit and can't find the start a new thread button, so, if you please for the moment, would you allow me to mention something: Brown-headed cowbirds.
I hurt no bird and keep them feed year round but now the brown-headed cowbirds have begun to arrive and they are eating so much feed and running off the smaller birds.
I was told a few yrs. ago by an ornithologist that the best way to keep them away from the seeds of the smaller birds was to take up the mixed food and replace with black oil sunflower seed. This worked for several yrs. but I noticed y'day they were on the wire mesh bird feeder trying to get to the sunflower seed.
Plus since they parasitize the nests of some of our song birds I wish to keep them as far from my yard as possible.
Any suggestions please?
Thank you,
L. Confused
