Mom was a great fan of crossword puzzles. Some of my earliest childhood memories are of the two of us sitting together quietly and puzzling out the words to fill the empty squares.

Many thanks, Toni. I'm taking your advice and diversifying my writing a bit. It actually was a refreshing challenge to write about something other than plants for a change! Smiling

Thank you, Sharon. I really would like to write a novel, but for the foreseeable future, other priorities will claim my attention. Never enough time... Smiling

Thanks for your kind comments, Brenda and Vicki. It was only after writing this story that I fully realized how much influence my mother had on my life. She was a beautiful lady in every sense of that word.

Hi there, Linda! Great to hear from you! Glad you enjoyed the article. I'm stretching my wings a bit and trying some non-garden writing.

Speaking of missing our parents, someone recently remarked that when our parents die, we become orphans. I'd never thought about it from that perspective.

It's also shocking to realize we've become the oldest generation when we lose our parents.

I can picture my grandmother and grandfather as "old," but now that I'm almost their age when they died, somehow it seems impossible that I've reached that stage in life. I certainly don't feel that old, but I'm blessed with good health and vigor and a million different interests that keep me alert and involved. And I gotta love my family physician. He tells me that I have the blood pressure of an 18-year-old female, the skin of a much younger man, and a prostate that has never enlarged. OK, now I'm bragging and that last item might have been too much information. Sorry. Smiling

Oh how funny.

Somewhere along the way I remember saying that I was enjoying getting to know you better, Larry.
Well, ummmmmm, can I take that statement back now?

I just laughed till my sides hurt.
Too funny.

Sorry......I really am glad you are physically fit!

Once you arrive in May, you may REALLY want to take that statement back! Hilarious!

Wonderful account of your love for your mother, Larry!

I lost my own parents decades ago, but am blessed to be caring for other senior-seniors in my life now. I've learned so much about the "real" priorities of life from them.

Thanks for writing and sharing your memories!

Thank you, Nancy and Connie, for those kind words. Mom was the child of a communal society that treasured its children. I and my siblings were beneficiaries of that communal value instilled in her.

Glad you enjoyed a good laugh, Linda!

Sorry to be responding so late. Our computer has been in the repair shop the past two days. When I brought it home this afternoon and hooked it back up, I had no Internet connectivity. My computer guru and I spent most of the rest of the afternoon trying figure out the problem. It finally came down to a defective router. I had to install a new one and just now finally got back on the 'net. Grumbling
